This was new land where there had been water. In what state was this land? S. Supreme Court decided that the original part of the island is in New York, but the 83 percent of Ellis Island that is human-made is in New Jersey. However, all of Ellis Island is owned by the federal government. From here, visitors climb the stairs, just as arriving immigrants used to do, to the building’s main floor and its Great Hall. A huge space, the Great Hall is set up with benches and the inspectors’ tall desks.

People that the government did not want moving around the country were kept there. The United States fought in World War II from 1941 to 1945, against Germany, Italy, Japan, and other countries. S. government kept about 7,000 people at Ellis Island. Some were Germans and German Americans who the government thought were helping Germany.
