Neomycin on the other hand was effective against sensitive aerobes, particularly Streptococcus faecalis and Lactobacilli and neomycin-sensitive E. coli. Bacteroides and Clostridia were not effected by neomycin. The combination of drugs had a dramatic influence on the number of aerobic and anaerobic organisms. E. coli was significantly reduced but resistant E. coli emerged during therapy. Lactobacilli and Bacteroides were reduced but two volunteers with per­ sistently high Bacteroides counts also acquired high counts of Staphylococcus aureus and developed frequent loose stools.
